Founded in Bellevue, Washington, a new approach to teaching music argues that reading music, like reading language, is a right, not a talent. Its ambitions reach far beyond the Seattle area, toward classrooms around the world.
For most of the last century, learning piano has meant the same thing everywhere: memorize the notes, memorize the fingering, memorize the piece. Millions of children go through the ritual every year. Most can perform a handful of songs by the time they stop lessons. Very few can actually read music.
Elaine Chung believes that gap is not an accident of talent. It is a flaw in the system, and she has built something to fix it, right here in the Seattle area.
“Everyone is entitled to read music,” says Chung, founder of MathPiano®, a system founded in Bellevue, Washington and built on a claim that runs against decades of conventional teaching: that reading music is not a rare gift reserved for a talented few, but a skill any child can be taught, the same way they are taught to read language.
It is not, she is careful to say, another piano curriculum. It is an attempt to change what an entire field assumes is possible, and it is moving quickly enough that other educators are starting to take notice.
A Precedent From a King
Chung’s model has an unusual origin point: not a conservatory, but a 15th-century Korean king.
More than 500 years ago, Sejong the Great looked at a kingdom where reading and writing belonged only to the educated elite, and decided that was a problem worth solving. His solution was Hangul, an alphabet engineered to be logical, systematic, and learnable by anyone, regardless of birth or status. It did not simply add a new script to Korea. It redefined who was allowed to be literate.
Chung is making a similar bet about music: that literacy, once redesigned around how people actually think, stops being a privilege and becomes a right.
The Hidden Cost of the Old Method
Ask parents whether their child can sight-read a new piece of music, and many hesitate before answering. Traditional instruction trains students to memorize note names, hand positions, and individual songs, without building the underlying fluency to read something they have never seen. The result is a quiet, widespread problem: students who can perform confidently but freeze the moment the sheet music changes.

“Reading music should not be a privilege reserved for naturally talented musicians,” Chung says. “It should be a language that every child has the opportunity to learn.”
A Direct Challenge to the Field
This belief is the foundation the entire program is built on, and it runs counter to how music education has operated for generations: reading music is not an advanced achievement for the gifted. It is a basic skill, as fundamental as literacy itself, and it belongs to every child.
That is not a minor adjustment to piano pedagogy. It is the kind of foundational reset that, occasionally, arrives in a field and quietly rewrites its rules, the sort of change people tend to recognize only in hindsight, once the old assumptions have stopped making sense. If the model holds up at scale, it will not just produce more capable piano students. It will replace a system built around innate talent with one built around access, and it appears to be doing so on a timeline measured in years rather than decades.
From One Studio to a National Ambition
The program took shape at the Bellevue Academy of Arts & Music (BAAM), which recently expanded into a new 4,000-square-foot facility to keep pace with demand, an early signal that something is resonating beyond a single classroom.
Chung’s ambitions extend well past Bellevue. MathPiano® is being positioned for adoption by music studios, elementary schools, private schools, homeschool programs, and community education organizations nationwide. Licensing arrangements are opening the door for institutions to bring the curriculum in-house, while digital learning resources now in development aim to carry the method to students regardless of geography. The goal, as Chung describes it, is nothing less than making music literacy a standard part of childhood education, rather than a fortunate outcome reserved for a lucky few.
The ambition does not stop at licensing. Through its nonprofit arm, MathPiano® is setting its sights on something far larger: a future where the curriculum reaches every school and every child, free of charge, anywhere in the world. It is a goal built on the same premise as the method itself, that access to music literacy should never depend on geography, income, or luck.
A Korean Idea With Global Reach
As Korean film, television, music, and technology continue to reshape global culture, Chung is betting that Korean educational philosophy can do something similar for how the world learns music. Built on the same logic that once transformed literacy across an entire nation, MathPiano® poses a question simple enough to sound obvious and consequential enough to unsettle an established field: what if every child could learn to read music?
Chung’s answer is already moving outward from a single classroom in Bellevue, Washington, the same corner of the Seattle area that gave it its start, toward a future in which music literacy is not a talent some children happen to be born with, but a skill any child can be taught. Shifts of this kind usually take a generation to prove themselves. This one, so far, is not waiting that long.
